Velasquez hid many things in his paintings. This was his only nude. Such a contrast to Mars who hangs next to her in the National Gallery. Side by side it is almost impossible to take the cliché of their assumed roles and not feel the depth to which Velasquez has interpreted them as lovers. I doff my hat to you sir (well my woolly beret, at least) and say you have exquisite taste in art.
